Target invests in local stores

Target wants more of its Memphis-area customers to be able to add beer and additional grocery items to shopping lists that already include the chain’s home accessories and latest fashions.

The Minneapolis-based retailer is in the midst of a $1 billion renovation of about 340 existing stores in 2010, the effects of which can already be seen throughout Target’s Memphis footprint.

The retailer began selling beer at its 5959 Poplar Ave. store in February. And Target has applied for permits to sell beer at two more of its roughly half dozen Memphis stores – at 7697 Winchester Road and 7989 U.S. 64.

GSO honors conductor on tenth anniversary season

During the last classical concert of this season, the Germantown Symphony Orchestra recently honored Dr. Ronald Vernon’s tenth anniversary as music director and conductor.

The GSO presented him with a collage of events spanning the last decade.

Police search for suspect in Cordova bank robbery

CORDOVA, TN (WMC-TV) - A suspect remains at large in the Tuesday morning robbery of the  Regions Bank at 1045 North Germantown Parkway.

According to authorities, a lone woman entered the bank just before 9:00 a.m. Tuesday.

"We had a lone female enter the bank, produced a weapon, and demanded money from the teller," said Lt. Preston Morton.

After receiving an undetermined amount of cash, the woman fled in what was described as a late model silver or blue Pontiac.

Witnesses said a dye pack exploded in the getaway car and red smoke was seen coming from the car.

Election Commission invites Shelby Co. voters to inspect machines

The Shelby County Election Commission will hold voting machine inspections prior to the Aug. 5 elections.

The touch screen units to be used for Early Voting will be ready for inspection on Thursday, July 8 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The touch screen units to be used for Election Day will be ready for inspection on Monday, July 26 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Anyone who wishes to inspect the machines should visit the Election Operations Center, located at 980 Nixon Drive in Memphis during the above times.

Sales Tax Holiday to provide savings for Tenn. shoppers

The fifth annual Tennessee Sales Tax Holiday will begin Friday, Aug. 6 and will continue through Sunday, Aug. 8. During this weekend, consumers can save almost 10 percent on tax-free clothing, school and art supplies and computer purchases.

Gov. Phil Bredesen said the holiday is intended to help families across the state.

"The holiday provides much needed savings for all Tennessee shoppers and prepares children for success by making sure they start the first day of school properly equipped with items they need," Bredesen said.
