Germantown woman relieved to hear her family is safe, despite losing homes

Ashley Orr says she spent several hours waiting by her cell phone wondering if her family was still alive.

MEMPHIS, TN- (WMC-TV) - A Germantown woman's family was hit hard by the devastating storm in Moore, Oklahoma.

Ashley Orr says she spent several hours waiting by her cell phone wondering if her family was still alive.

It was a phone call around 7 p.m. Monday night that finally put her mind to rest.

"They stood in the backyard of my aunt's house and happened to pick up one phone call and they told one person and it went through the grapevine," said Orr.

Orr has a lot of family in tornado ravaged Moore, OK.  It was not until that one phone call that she and her mother could finally be at ease.

"One of my cousins was in his truck and it got completely spun around as he was driving it," Orr added.

Pictures taken by Orr's family shortly after show the extent of their damage.  Windows were blown out of their homes.

Outrage over plan to invest millions in suburban schools

Grossman could not believe her eyes when she scoured the new school budget.

MEMPHIS, TN- (WMC-TV) - Parents are outraged over a plan to invest $20 million dollars into Shelby County suburban schools that plan to leave the district.

"Don't start something you can't finish, and spend $20 million dollars you don't have," said concerned Shelby County Schools parent Audrey Grossman.

Grossman could not believe her eyes when she scoured the new school budget.

The budget includes $10 million to fix up Millington Central High's Vo-Tech and gym, and $9.1 million to replace the Germantown High auditorium and alarm system.

"Why should the county system spend $20 million on improvements to schools that are almost certainly not going to be in the county system?" said Grossman.

The improvements would not be done until March 2015.
