Five resume boosters

A photographer candidate recently submitted his resume to my chief photographer.

The rag was riddled with typos, grammatical errors and misspellings. It looked like the guy had never heard of the "spell check" feature on his laptop.

Shoot! Score! In the waste basket!

Those are the obvious resume mistakes. Author and career coach Ford R. Myers suggested these five ways to tidy your resume, including some that aren't so obvious:

* BE BRIEF. Myers said there are basically five parts of a resume: Header/Contact Information, Career Summary, Professional Experience, Education & Affiliations and Professional Development. Out of those, Myers said Career Summary should be the tightest.

"The summary is a brief statement of who you are, where you're 'coming from' and what skills and expertise you have to contribute to an organization," said Myers.

Memphis-based ServiceMaster brands help military veterans raise money to start businesses

Four ServiceMaster brands have joined forces with a new online fundraising program called Boost A Hero in an effort to help military veterans purchase franchise businesses. Boost A Hero, available at www.sprigster.com, provides a platform where vets utilize "crowdfunding" to raise the capital they need to purchase franchises like ServiceMaster Clean, Merry Maids, Furniture Medic and AmeriSpec -- which are all ServiceMaster brands.

The four ServiceMaster brands are charter members of the Boost A Hero program, which was recently initiated by Sprigster in partnership with the International Franchise Association (IFA).

"The unemployment rate for military veterans is 50 percent higher than the national average, despite the fact that vets make outstanding team members and business owners," said Beth Solomon, IFA Vice President of Strategic Initiatives & Industry Relations.

Free Small Business Classes at Memphis Public Library

The Benjamin L. Hooks Central Library will host three small business classes that include information on everything from steps to starting and maintaining a business, to the legal aspects of owning and operating a small business.

How to Start and Finance a Small Business

This program will cover the finer points of starting a business, including writing a business plan and obtaining financing.

Presenter: Sandra Jackson, Senior Area Manager, Tennessee District Office of the U.S. Small Business Administration.

Farmer's Market in Cordova to Open Soon

The empty Schnucks store on Germantown Parkway in Cordova will be filled soon!

The owners of the Winchester Farmer's Markets plan to renovate the empty building and convert it into the Cordova Farmer's Market International.

The sign is already up on the building, and crews are already working inside.

The Benjamin L. Hooks Central Library will host small business classes that include information on everything from steps to starting and maintaining a business, to legal aspects of owning and operating a small business.

Small Business Start Up: Laws and Taxes

The class will cover the basics of starting a business including legal aspects, incorporation, taxes, and employee issues.
