GPD officer accused of leaving city limits on duty recommended for termination

GERMANTOWN, TN- (WMC-TV) - The Germantown police officer accused of leaving the suburb to visit a friend while on duty is being recommended for termination, though he is appealing that recommendation.

Officer Tarvis Davis was supposed to be working overnight when he reportedly left city limits on May 15. He did not respond to calls for his services and police personnel spent nearly a half hour searching for him.

Davis' captain spoke with him about the situation but did not issue an official statement of charges. It was another police department supervisor who reported the incident to the proper authorities. Because he did not follow protocol, Captain Mike Griffus was suspended for one day.

This is not the first time Officer Davis has been in trouble while working for the Germantown Police Department. On February 1, he crashed his patrol car while running a personal errand. For that incident, he was suspended for five days without pay.

The judge ordered a mental evaluation for Chris Jones in May.

MEMPHIS, TN- (WMC-TV) - A judge found the estranged husband of Heather Palumbo-Jones mentally competent and fit to stand trial. This comes after the judge ordered a mental evaluation for Chris Jones in May.

Friends of Heather Palumbo-Jones sat in a Germantown courtroom Wednesday as Chris Jones walked into to hear the results of a mental evaluation.

Jones, through his attorney, waived his preliminary hearing. Palumbo-Jones' friends do not mince words about how they felt seeing him in court.

"There is a monster inside that hurt our friend and we want justice," said friend Melissa Smith.

Palumbo-Jones' friends vowed to show up at every court hearing for Jones who is charged with second degree murder in the death of his estranged wife.

Heather Palumbo-Jones disappeared April 15. At that time, Chris told investigators he had no idea what happened to the mother of his two children.

Germantown's Paula Dorris and her family drove their 2013 C-Max Hybrid to Destin, FL, for Memorial Day weekend.

GERMANTOWN, TN- (WMC TV) - From a faulty child-lock to electrical failures, records indicate a pattern of concerns with the 2013 Ford C-Max Hybrid.

Germantown's Paula Dorris and her family drove their 2013 C-Max Hybrid to Destin, FL, for Memorial Day weekend. "As soon as I arrived at my location, the power steering fault light came on," she said. "It locked up. The power steering didn't work at all."

Dorris said her family had to leave the vehicle in a Destin auto shop for repairs. They rented a car to drive home. She had to fly back to Florida the following weekend to claim her C-Max, then make the drive from Destin to Germantown for the second time in a week.

Germantown family thanks St. Jude for its research, treatments

MEMPHIS, TN- (WMC-TV) - A little boy's battle with a brain tumor inspired his two older sisters to execute an aggressive plan to raise money for St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. The money they raised is now being used for research and treating kids, like their brother, who are battling life-threatening diseases.

In April 2012, Ingram started getting intense headaches.

"And he would just look at you with that look of 'Help me please'. But there was nothing that we could do to help," said Ingram's mother, Ashley Dismuke.

Quickly, it was discovered Ingram had a cancerous tumor on his brain stem. He needed surgery.

After the operation, Ingram became a patient at St. Jude.

Video/speaker system on greenway installed to deter crime

MEMPHIS, TN- (WMC-TV) - "Welcome to the Germantown Greenway. For your protection, this parking lot is being recorded by video cameras."

This is what Germantown Greenway visitors hear upon entering the trail system. The goal of the new greeting is to reassure runners, walkers, and cyclists that they are safe.

The speaker within the camera allows people leaving their car behind to relax knowing that there is someone watching, but it also serves as a warning to those looking to stir up trouble.

The camera/speaker system serves as an interactive way of communicating that might even catch you off guard if you did not know it was there.

"I feel pretty safe. In the mornings, I wear my lights and blinkers. I don't have earphones in, so I'm real aware of what's around me," said cyclist Michael Block.

While Block appreciates the extra surveillance, he is not convinced it will prevent crime.
